Job Title: Vineyard and Winery Manager
Location: Terra 5047, St. George, Utah (5047 feet elevation)
Overview:
Terra 5047 is a high-elevation estate situated at 5047 feet just outside of St. George, featuring diurnal temperature swings similar to Napa and Sonoma. The vineyard is planted in deep, lava-influenced topsoil with large cobbles. Our vineyard and winemaking operations are overseen by a California-based vineyard and winemaking consultant team. We are seeking a highly skilled individual to manage all aspects of vineyard operations, winemaking, and facilities management. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work in a unique and dynamic environment, where the winery is currently powered by generators and will be fully connected to the grid within 12-15 months.
Key Responsibilities:
Vineyard & Estate Management:
• Oversee all vineyard operations, including planting, pruning, harvesting, and pest/disease control.
• Manage vineyard equipment and infrastructure, ensuring they are in good working order.
• Maintain and improve vineyard soil health and water management practices. As directed.
• Ensure compliance with vineyard regulations and best practices.
• Drive quality control on shoot height, fruit and canopy placement as directed.
• Oversee well management, septic systems, road usage, and other estate infrastructure.
• Procure chemicals, nutrients, and other necessary supplies.
• Perform scouting, yield estimates, sugar sampling, and virus testing. As directed.
• Conduct irrigation monitoring and management. As directed.
• Conduct vine counts, cluster counts, and other vineyard data as directed.
• Supervise frost monitoring and prevention (including frost spraying).
• Manage vineyard crews and direct harvest operations.
Facilities Management Operations:
• Oversee the maintenance and repair of winery buildings, equipment, and infrastructure.
• Manage utilities, including water, electricity (via generators), and wastewater systems.
• Ensure a safe, clean, and efficient working environment.
• Supervise landscaping and grounds maintenance.
• Oversee the organization and optimization of winery facilities and equipment.
Winemaking Operations:
• Coordinate all winemaking and wine quality for appropriate sales channels to ensure smooth operations. Terra label is top tier, Silver Reef as 2nd label
• Perform basic harvest wine analysis, including pH, TA, sugar levels, fermentation progression, and SO2 monitoring as needed. Utilize ETS or other second lab for detailed analysis.
• Lead and manage harvest operations such as pressing, fruit sorting, racking, inoculation, punch-downs, and filtration.
• Implement and maintain quality control standards to ensure wine quality.
• Manage budgets, resources, and inventory effectively.
• Direct the receiving, processing, and storage of harvested fruit.
• Sanitize winery equipment and maintain cleanliness.
• Operate pumps, handle juice and wine transfers, and perform pump-overs and punch-downs.
• Move all wine as needed with limited risk of contaminants and oxygen pick up.
• Manage barrel work, including filling, topping, stirring, racking, and pomace removal.
• Accurately record data and complete work orders.
• Oversee bottling operations, including QC, ordering bottling materials (e.g., corks, capsules, bottles, labels).
• Work with consulting winemaker and project leader on blending and tasting sessions, working closely with consultants to develop blends and trial wines.
• Maintain inventory of all needed winery supplies; all chemicals, barrels, etc
Lab and Analytical Responsibilities:
• Perform regular lab analysis of grapes and wines, from vineyard to bottle. And or work with ETS lab for additional analysis.
• Manage bulk wine storage across all tanks and barrels.
• Monitor and manage the quality of wine at every stage of production.
Team Leadership & Collaboration:
• Oversee existing personnel and seasonal staff hiring, training, and management, ensuring alignment with the company culture and values.
• Lead all aspects of needed HR per central office, office procedure manuals, safety rules or other needs as directed.
• Satisfy all government regulations, filing of BATF required documents, federal label approvals, etc.
• Collaborate with sales, marketing, and hospitality teams to promote the brand and create educational content.
• Represent Terra 5047 at offsite events such as auctions, dinners, and pouring events as directed.
• Assist with Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) and wholesale distribution needs.
• Lead product training for staff and meet with members, hosting winemaker dinners and making presentations to customers as directed.
Physical Demands & Work Conditions:
• The work environment may include cold, hot, wet, slippery, and noisy conditions.
• Flexibility in working hours, including weekends and long hours during the growing season and harvest (April to September).
• The winery operates off the grid, with plans to be fully connected to the grid within 12-15 months.
• Must be able to handle hazardous materials and perform frequent physical tasks such as walking, bending, lifting, and climbing stairs and ladders.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks throughout the day, including sitting, standing, twisting, bending, crouching, and full-range motion.
