Assistant Vineyard Manager
Duties:
• Provide oversight and direction to the vineyard managers to assure that the appropriate levels of vineyard inputs are meeting the market requirements of specific vineyard blocks
• Write and continue to update viticulture plans for each vineyard, including appropriate practices to address the needs of each customer for each vineyard block
• Be in each vineyard on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to follow up and assure that day-to-day viticulture activities are occurring according to plan, including pruning, shoot removal, crop adjustments, irrigation, fertility, tissue, soil and water testing
• Communicating and meeting with winery clients and marketing grapes
• Contribute to innovation and change which improves efficiency and quality
• Maintain sustainable programs (i.e. Lodi Rules)
• Produce a weekly pest report to Area Vineyard Manager
• Supervises Foremen, Sub-foremen, Tractor Drivers, and Irrigators
• Trains and develops employees with assistance from Vineyard Manager and Human Resources
• Explains and demonstrates field work techniques and safety regulations to inexperienced workers
• Direct and schedule overall daily activities of personnel and equipment including: irrigation, fertilization, tractor activities, spraying and harvesting
• Oversee delivery of materials for: spray programs, fertilizers, stake & wire, and equipment
• Conduct necessary meetings in order to effectively communicate work priorities to vineyard personnel
• Review spray/irrigation programs
• Work closely with vendors and external organizations such as: pump and irrigation companies, Ag Commissioners Office and VESCO
• Work closely with area vineyard manager to schedule grape deliveries to wineries during harvest
• Performs and/or supervises safety meetings and pesticide training
• Supervises pesticide and other material applications to the vineyards
• Completes pesticide reporting
• Calibrates sprayers
• Supervises foremen and sub-foremen in preparation of timesheets
• Reports injuries in a timely basis and cares for injured workers
Skills:
• Someone who approaches their job with an ownership mentality with the ability to see the big picture and forecast future needs
• Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to communicate with different personalities
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment
• Team oriented
• Computer literacy and competence required, including but not limited to MS Office – with Excel knowledge, database management, etc.
• Comfortable researching and using the Internet
Qualification:
• BS in Viticulture or related field
• 2+ years of viticulture and winery/grower relations experience
• Must have the ability to work cordially with co-workers and perform duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the company’s values
• Minimum 2 years experience in the wine grape industry
• Strong background in IPM practices
• Working knowledge of irrigation management practices and implementation
• Working knowledge of canopy management practices and implementation
• Bilingual – Spanish a plus
Licenses
• QAL Required/PCA preferred
• Valid CA drivers license
• First aid and CPR certified, or ability to be certified
Physical Environment/Requirements
• Often working outdoors in extremes of heat/humidity and other weather conditions
• Use of ATV for field monitoring
• Often working outdoors in extremes of heat/humidity/cold and other weather conditions
• Exposed to dust, noise, pesticides, gasoline, diesel fuel and solvents
• Works with flammable and toxic materials
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Work is strenuous
• Visual acuity
• Ability to hear
• Use of both hands and finger dexterity
• Ability to walk on uneven ground
• Adhere to company PPE (personal protective equipment) policies
